The options for your Purdue email are

  • Use a Purdue email service, either Exchange or Office 365 email.
  • Forward your @purdue.edu email to an address you specify.  This option allows you to use an unsupported mail service, like Gmail, for your convenience.
  • Disable Purdue email service (your_login@purdue.edu will not receive email).  This option is also known as 'setting your email to reject'.

The Purdue email service options determine where your @purdue.edu email is delivered.

Modifying your Email service

  1. To change your email service, please go to the 'career account information' page, at https://www.purdue.edu/apps/account.

  2. Log in with your Purdue career account username/boilerkey.

NOTE:  If you are changing the email service for your student organization, please use the credentials that were provided for that organization.

  3. Click on the 'Change Mailbox' link, as shown below (outlined in red).

  4. Click the button next to the Purdue email service that is appropriate for your role at the university.  Options are shown in the image below and explained in the next section.

  5. Click the 'Save Changes' button.

  6. Click 'Log out'.
  • If your service is set to Exchange or Office 365 email, you can check your email by going to https://portal.office.com.
  • Log into either Purdue Email Service with your Purdue career account username and password.

Use the Purdue Exchange Server

This option is only for Faculty and Staff.  This means that any email sent to your @purdue.edu address will be stored on the Purdue Exchange server.  You can use Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Web Access (OWA) to access your email and calendar information.  To avoid potential loss of email, please see the Caution below.

Use the Purdue Office 365 email Service

This option is only for Students and Retirees.  This means that any email sent to your @purdue.edu address will be a part of the Purdue space in the Microsoft cloud solution for email.  You can use the Microsoft portal (https://portal.office.com) or any other configured email client (using standard IMAP or POP protocols) to access your email and calendar information.  To avoid potential loss of email, please see the Caution below.

NOTE:  You must activate or coordinate your Office 365 account before you may begin receiving email to that address.  Please follow the steps in How do I activate or coordinate my Purdue Office 365 account?

Forward your @purdue.edu email (to an address you specify)

This means that you would like to have all of your Purdue email sent to an alternate account.  Please make sure to use a valid email address.  To avoid potential loss of email, please see the Caution below.

Disable your @purdue.edu email (your_login@purdue.edu will not receive email)

This means that you do not want to receive any Purdue email.  Email sent to your @purdue.edu address will be returned to the sender (bounced), stating user unknown.  This choice should only be used once you have left Purdue, as your Purdue email address is used for official university business.  To avoid potential loss of email, please see the Caution below.

Tip: This is typically referred to as setting your email service to reject.

Caution: If you currently use either the Purdue Exchange Service or the Purdue Office 365 Email Service and you change your email settings, an account deletion process will be initiated.

  • For accounts on the Exchange Server, your Exchange account will be disabled as soon as a change is made to use a different email service.  If you reset your settings within 30 days, and start using the Exchange Server again, then your original mailbox will be reconnected.  The mailbox is permanently deleted after 30 days.

Tip: Instructions for saving your Exchange account data can be found in How do I export .pst file data from Outlook?.

  • If you are moving from the Purdue Office 365 Email service be sure to connect that account to your forwarded account since the information in Office 365 will only be maintained for a short while.
